Where does the idea that expanding social welfare programs would help Americans come from? Why do people believe that social welfare should be a priority for the American government? The original founders of our great democratic nation stated that we had certain inalienable rights. The rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. They did not believe it was the governments role to give us that happiness in the form of a monthly check.
If the government gives people money, people will not have to work.
If people do not work, the government will run out of money.
If the government gives people money, the government will run out of money.
What does that mean? That means that social welfare programs that continue to grow are not sustainable. There has to be motivation to work. If you are given things, you will not work for them!! It is also unfair to the people that are working. Those are the people that are paying for the socialist programs.
1) Why should hard working Americans be paying the way for others? 2) Why shouldn't they instead be allowed to invest their money as they see fit? 3) Where did this sense of entitlement come from? 4) Why do Americans believe that expanded welfare is an answer to a problem-any problem?
Answers: 1 and 2) People that generate profit shouldn't pay the way for others. They should be allowed to utilize that profit to create more profit! This is the way that wealth is generated, jobs are created, and economies are boosted. 3) It came from a liberal agenda that encourages people to believe that those who generate wealth are inherently bad. Who is most susceptible to this agenda? Young people that have had most of their possessions given to them by their parents. The same parents that have rescued them from every other problem they have ever had. People who have become indoctrinated into this liberal quagmire really believe that you, me, and the government owe them something. They should be given everything. Grades, cars, homes, jobs, and health insurance. 4) Most Americans don't believe expanded social welfare programs are the answer to our ever-increasing debt. The amount of Americans that do believe this is quickly shrinking. Middle-class working citizens no longer want to foot the bill for a bunch of lazy people that want to live off of tax-payers' money. Expanding social welfare programs does not help anyone except those who will never try to help themselves.

While you may make an interesting point your operating off of the flawed belief that there is something good, or redeeming, about capitalism. Why is the accumulation of wealth a good thing? What about our economy needs expanded? Why should we constantly be producing and buying more and more for no reason?
ReplyDeleteNow, I try and be as realistic as the next man. I'm aware that some people will always try to abuse a system and some people are inherently lazy, but if thats the price to pay to help those who really need it, I'm willing to pay it.
It's easy to label people as liberal's with no sense of reality. What I've found most of the time is most people that preach about stopping social welfare programs have no idea how they can really help people. What its like to feel that relief when someone is able to step in and feed your children or put a roof over your head.
I work over forty hours a week in addition to going to school full time, which I'm paying for, could I use lower taxes to meet my own finical goals? Of course. At the same time though I wish taxes, including my own, were higher.
It is not the vast majority of welfare recipients who have a sense of entitlement. It is the the general middle class who thinks this, that everyone is entitled to a house, a car and a myriad of tacky coach purses. Your "American Dream" is destroying the world.
I'm sure that your aware also that the privileged and rich white protestant men who wrote the constitution originally wanted it to read "life, liberty, and the purist of property." It saddens me to see that over 200 years later people still equate happiness with wealth.
"The rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. They did not believe it was the governments role to give us that happiness in the form of a monthly check."
Good to know that all happiness is, is a monthly check.
It is not the government's role to "help people." It is people's role to help people. People help people way better than the government ever did. To underscore this fact look at all the corruption that is going on right now with aid going to Haiti. Aid given to the Haitian government is mysteriously disappearing. Where is it disappearing to? Haitian officials' pockets of course.
ReplyDeleteOr better yet, look at what happened in New Orleans with government aid. Our government gave billions of dollars in "aid" which never actually aided anyone in New Orleans. The government is terrible facilitating aid. It is great at bribery, pork barrel projects, and corruption.
If you want to help people, why don't you decide how you help them. Or better yet, donate your time helping someone. Do you need the government to decide how to help others for you?
Why should we be producing? So that you can eat, duh. Why should you consume? Because you are a human who has needs such as clothing, food, and shelter.
The government should not be allowed to define how we live!!! If I want to accumulate wealth, that is my right. If I want to live in poverty, I'll move to Cuba- where they produce nothing, and the majority of the people have very little to consume...
This is a great example of last weeks exercises with valid arguements. Americans are very generous to a point, then most of us expect some type of result or progress myself included. Helping someone get from unemployment to employment is a good investment of our money. Helping a mother or father get out of a shelter into a home or apartment is and investment. Helping someone who isn't willing to help themselves is taking our hard earned tax money and burning it. There is no end in site or money to help someone else, just an endless abyess of a hole we as generous people try to fill or help. I think this was a great observation.
